Where is your LG aircon leaking water from?
If you can’t figure out the exact source of the water leakage, just take a photo and send it to us. But try, as much as possible, to capture the part of the aircon where the water drips. And then encircle the area. Below are several areas where aircon water leakage is most likely to show:
From the front of the fan coil unit
If your LG aircon is leaking water from the front, a drainage pipe choke is the most likely cause. The choke (or blockage) can be anywhere in the drainage line. Fortunately, normal aircon servicing can quickly and inexpensively solve this issue. And depending on the location of the choke, the water leakage problem can potentially affect multiple fan coil units. If the choke is in the area along the end of the drain line and near the floor trap, all fan coil units–if you have a multi-split aircon–will likely leak water. The usual fix is installing a bigger drainage pipe.
From the back of the fan coil unit
Water leakage from the back of your LG aircon’s fan coil unit usually indicates a choke in the back tray. This happens due to the presence of a small area at the back of the fan coil unit that is able to trap water. Normal servicing cannot clear this tray, as it requires dismantling of the indoor unit, which is a task for a service technician.
When dismantling the unit, a chemical overhaul is recommended along with it. It’s to maximize the effort and cost. Paying to clear the back tray alone is not cost effective at all. Fortunately, back tray leaks rarely happens, as water takes a long time to accumulate in that area before leaking.
From the aircon trunking or false ceiling
Water leakage from aircon trunking or the false ceiling is the most challenging to address. Blackened splotches along the trunking or on the surface of the false ceiling (if the copper pipe is enclosed in the false ceiling) might indicate aircon condensation. Additionally, it is very hard to pinpoint exactly where in the AC system the condensation originates. Water may come out of a small torn part of the pipe insulation and then spread out. Or, the entire insulation itself is breaking down from normal wear and tear.

Why is your LG aircon leaking water

Drainage pipe choke
Drainage pipe choke is the top cause of aircon leakage. And there is no way to permanently solve this issue. Except maybe for ceiling cassette aircon units where instances of drainage pipe choke are rare or nonexistent. This is because of the presence of a water pump in a ceiling cassette aircon; the water pump directs the water into the drainage pipe, creating a pressure differential that effectively prevents drainage pipe choke.
Dirty aircon
A dirty aircon is more likely to produce condensation in the system. Dirt blocks air flow and creates a high-pressure buildup, which leads to a bigger chance of condensation on the chiller pipes. This is why it is necessary to do regular servicing for your air conditioning unit.
Fan speed is too low
Similar to a dirty aircon where dirt blocks airflow, a too-low fan speed creates sluggish airflow, causing pressure differences in the piping that lead to condensation. Surprisingly, many customers discover that increasing the fan speed instantly resolves the issue. However, some are unwilling to adjust the fan speed to prevent condensation. Despite this pushback, we still strongly recommend selecting a higher fan speed to enhance the longevity of your air conditioning system.

How to solve LG aircon leaking water?
Normal servicing
If your LG aircon is leaking as a result of a drainage pipe choke, the easiest fix is aircon servicing. The scope of normal aircon servicing includes vacuuming the drainage hose to clear the blockage. Unless the congestion in the pipe is severe, vacuuming usually solves the problem. Sometimes, an air compressor is used instead of a vacuum.
Chemical overhaul
If the water is dripping from the back of the fan coil unit, dismantle the unit to access the back tray where water has accumulated. A chemical wash, which involves a chemical solution sprayed only on top of the fan coil unit, is not going to help. Only a thorough chemical overhaul can address the issue.
Changing insulation inside trunking/ false ceiling
Replacing the insulation specifically on the areas of the aircon trunking where water is coming out is also an effective fix. But you will need a service technician to diagnose the water leakage source first and to propose a solution. There are cases, however, of customers requesting an insulation change on a specific area first because of the cost of replacing the entire piping.
Adjusting water pipe level
If your LG aircon leaks regularly from drainage pipe choke, consider changing the drainage pipe level. It is possible to adjust the level to a steeper angle and make it easy for the water to flow out. A gradient is always necessary for water flowing out. Everything boils down to simply figuring out which part of the water pipe can be adjusted to enable the water flow. There are cases, though, where the house layout itself restricts adjustments to the water pipe level.
