How much to fix noisy Aircon fan motor?

Introduction to Aircon Fan Motor

Do you have a noisy aircon? Chances are, your Aircon fan motor might have an issue. Your air conditioners are specifically designed to help create a cool and conducive environment for you to relax in; However, this may not always be the case. Oftentimes, issues such as noisy aircon can serve the exact opposite purpose – making you feel anything but relaxed. This is often explained by the way our air conditioning units function. Over time, air debris gets stuck in parts of the unit, causing them to malfunction and produce the clanking or buzzing noises that we so vehemently detest.

Tthe cause of your noisy aircon might be due to a fan motor issue in your condenser or indoor unit. There is a multitude of reasons that could be causing this, such as a jammed air con compressor, or a debris-coated fan motor. Before we conduct any Aircon repair for it, we have to diagnose the exact issue.

Before we begin to delve into the causes of a noisy aircon unit, let us first explore the components within a typical air conditioning system.

Components of a noisy aircon

In Singapore, most of the systems we purchase are split type aircon units. Where the outdoor unit remains outside while the indoor unit cools the office or home itself. Regardless, both types of air conditioners will comprise of a fan or a panel. While the external unit also comprises of a compressor.

Due to the constant movement of the compressor and fan. It will make a certain level of noise within the unit even when it isn’t malfunctioning. This is why manufacturers often include sound proof material within the unit to minimise the level of sound produced. There are fasteners and fencing that are designed to keep the air conditioning unit secure and free of any vibrations that may contribute to further noises.

Why does aircon fan motor results in noisy aircon?

However, as with any appliance, these fasteners may become loose over time. And the compressor may malfunction. The different types of noises and indicators that a specific unit makes often hints at the different faults occurring within the air conditioning system.

For example, the humming or buzzing sound of a unit indicates the accumulation of dirt in the fans of the air conditioning units. Causing them to operate at different speeds.

The fan motor and other moving parts of the aircon move in a way that will produce noise, hence, an aircon usually comes with padded, sound-proof material to reduce the noises. During installation, the fasteners and the fencing are meant to absorb a certain level of vibrations produced. However, as time passes, these components will start failing due to frequent wear and tear.

Types of noises your noisy aircon is making and what they mean

1. Clanking noise

Clanking probably meant that there is a loose part that is in need of replacement. This sound can also mean that the indoor blower or outdoor fan and its blades are out of place and hitting other parts. These types of issues should not be ignored as it will only get worse and create bigger problems.

2. Buzzing noise

A buzzing noise from your outside unit could mean several things:

  • Loose parts that are hitting other parts
  • Debris in either the indoor or outdoor unit that is being blown around
  • Outdoor fan motor is loose or about to fail
  • Fan blades are out of place
  • The copper lines from outside to inside are rubbed against other parts
  • The condenser coil has to be maintained
  • The air filter needs to be changed because of the built up in debris, particles and dirt
  • The blower is failing or getting out of place
  • Refrigerant leaks, resulting in your air conditioning freezing up

3. Banging noise

The banging noise is likely due to any loose parts that are hitting the other parts of the unit such as a connecting rod.  It could also be due to an unbalanced indoor blower. A banging noise may also indicate that your system needs to replace compressor unit.

4. Clicking noise

A constant clicking noise even when the aircon is running could be due to a defective control of a failing thermostat. It is also important for you to pay attention to any electrical hazards in the unit before bigger problems arise.

5. Humming noise

A humming sound is not that much of a problem but it could mean that loose parts and refrigerant piping are causing a vibration. If it is left unchecked, can lead to a more serious maintenance issue. It is also important to pay attention to any electrical hazards in the unit. If the compressor hums and refuses to start, there may be an issue with the motor, though loose wiring could trigger this noise, too.

6. Squealing noise

Blower and fan noises such as squeaks, squeals and rattles may be transmitted through the duct system. Outdoor fan motors and indoor blower motors squeal loudly when they’re failing. The blower wheel and housing will also squeal when they malfunction. It is normal if you hear this when you just started running the aircon, but if it happens during the running of the aircon, then something is wrong and should be fixed before bigger problems arise.

How to fix your noisy aircon?

1. Determine if the noisy aircon is an indoor or outdoor unit

In order to discern whether the noisy aircon is the outdoor or indoor unit. You have to look at its location. If it is indoor e.g. in a room/office, it is an indoor unit. If it is located on the exterior of the building. More often than not on an air con ledge, it is an outdoor unit.

2. Clean the unit

It is likely possible that a noisy aircon is just due to a need for some cleaning and maintenance. But, before undertaking any maintenance yourself, make sure that your aircon system is switched off. Beware of potential electrical hazard due to the many electrical parts in it. Firstly, open the aircon and find the fan. Clean the blades and remove any dust, particles, dirt etc. that might be stuck in the fan. If your blades are loose, then try to tighten them, or you may need a replacement.

3. Check the compressor

If cleaning is still not working, a likely possibility that leads to noisy aircon is a malfunctioning compressor. This usually happens in older systems. You probably won’t have to replace the compressor. However, if you absolutely cannot put up with the noise your A/C is making, call in a specialist.

4. Check the dual shaft

The dual fan motor has bearings that, when the system is first purchased, are sufficiently lubricated. However, after years of use, it will inevitably result in the deterioration of lubricant. This will lead to wear and tear. The bearings will then be more likely to grind against each other, making a harsh sound. In such cases, you can choose to lubricate the bearing or  it’s best to invest in a new dual shaft fan motor.

5. Check the aircon blade

A loose aircon fan blade could result in noisy aircon. Your system will have two fan blades, one at the front and one at the back. Ensure you check both, to see if they are damaged. If one, or both, are failing or are out of place, this is what is likely causing the noise. You are advised to replace the broken fan blades as soon as possible.

What to do if your noisy aircon is still not fixed?

Most air con professionals suggest that you should do a routine check on your air con unit every 6 months. If aircon is still noisy after the above instructions, or you are able to fix it. It is advisable for you to seek an aircon specialist. Here is how we can help you. Find out the model number of your indoor/outdoor unit. This is usually indicated at the sides of the air conditioning unit, and can be easily verified by googling the model number and cross-referencing it to ensure you got the correct one.

Quickly snap a picture of the model number that is visibly located on your aircon unit. Record a short snippet of the sound that’s emanating from the unit via voice recording or a video. We have to hear the sound generated from the noisy aircon to determine if it is really the fan motor. Sometimes it could be resulting from a broken clip. It could even be due to a string stuck in the middle of the aircon fan motor. Then, send the voice recording/ video snippet, as well as the model number to 96515152.

If you find that your air con is faulty, but is not emitting any noise that will provide you with any information on the source of the issue, check on the error code that is located either on the air con compressor itself, or on the remote control.
