Mitsubishi Aircon Catechin Filter: Hype or Not?

Allergic rhinitis affects around 13% of people in Singapore, according to the National University Health System (NUHS). The chronic condition is most widespread in kids all throughout Singapore, with 25% of preschoolers and 44% of school children suffering from it. Allergic rhinitis is also associated with other forms of nasal allergies, including asthma. The good thing is: the chronic condition can be managed and the associated allergic triggers can be effectively removed especially in controlled environments such as the confines of your home.
Most households in Singapore, where tropical heat can be relentless, have air conditioning systems. Air conditioning units all come with a removable air filter or two, the most basic health safety feature of the appliance that enables the screening and removal of dirt and debris–which are potential allergens–from indoor air.
Now, Mitsubishi has released a series of aircon models that tout a catechin filter feature, which is supposed to “not only absorb[s] tobacco smoke and other odour-causing pollutants, it also traps and inactivates microscopic viruses and bacteria,” according to an MIT press release on the Mitsubishi AC feature. Catechin, a substance derived from tea leaves, has antiviral and antibacterial properties, and it is used as coating for the Mitsubishi pre-filter. It is also said to be potent, even through regular washing during routine aircon maintenance, for up to ten years or more. Moreover, the catechin air filter in the air conditioner is paired with another layer of protection, the anti-allergy blue enzyme filter which screens particles as small as 0.01 microns. These include pollens, mites, mold spores, and dust particles–all of which are potential allergens. The anti-allergy blue enzyme filter effectively decomposes these allergens by severing their active protein bonds, rendering them harmless.

The Bottom Line
Catechin is a widely consumed antioxidant found in green tea and has been the subject of many different studies on cancer treatment. And surely, it does have antiviral and antibacterial properties. So, running your indoor air through a protective catechin coating might help reduce incidences of allergic attacks from susceptible members of your household.
