Electricity consumption cost of your LG aircon
Depending on the model and BTU capacity of your LG air conditioner, you can more accurately calculate the corresponding cost of your aircon’s electricity consumption by referring to the adjusted rates from the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore. According to the EMA, “from October to December 2024, the tariff rate is 29.10 cents/kWh (without GST), or 31.72 cents/kWh (with GST).” 1 kW is equivalent to 3412.142 BTU/hr. So, to convert BTU to kWh, just multiply by 0.000293. Then multiply the resulting figure with the current cost of electricity per kWh.

Minimizing your aircon power consumption
Troubleshooting your existing LG aircon’s common error codes–including error codes CH05, CH10, CH21, and CH 38–can prove instructive in helping you develop habits that enable optimal operating conditions for your air conditioning unit. Moreover, here are ways to further maintain your LG aircon’s optimal cooling performance, which is directly tied to reducing the electricity usage of your air conditioning system.
Things you can do to your home
- Apply a suitable sealant onto wall gaps. For window gaps, you may use foam insulation that you have carefully measured out and cut. Good insulation is important in energy cost-cutting for any air conditioned space. Preventing cool indoor air from mixing with hotter outdoor air helps the operation of your air conditioner. A well insulated room keeps the AC from overworking where it draws more electricity than is needed to cool a room.
- Use solar window films, heavy drapes, and black-out curtains to keep sunlight out of the room. Sunlight can heat up a room, which is something you want to avoid if you want to save electricity while running your air conditioner.
Things you can do to your aircon settings
- Position low-wattage fans to circulate cool air across the room. Fans are very effective in distributing air conditioned air, and they are able to do it for significantly less amount of electricity. With fans in place, you can set your LG air conditioner to run at a higher temperature and still keep the room cool and comfortable.
- Use your AC timer settings to lower your energy consumption. Your LG aircon has built-in energy-saving timer functionalities, which you can use for your convenience. The sleep mode is particularly useful for saving electricity, as it automatically increases the thermostat setting by 0.5 or 1 degree per hour for up to two hours. Additionally, check if your LG aircon model supports the LG Smart ThinQ app. This app allows you to easily adjust, customize, and control all aircon settings directly from your smartphone or tablet. Another feature worth exploring is the Active Energy Control, which is compatible with the LG ThinQ app. This feature significantly enhances energy efficiency and reduces energy consumption. Depending on the selected setting, the Active Energy Control feature can cut your aircon’s energy usage by up to 80%.
- Choose a thermostat setting of either 25 or 26 degrees Celsius. In this temperature range, there is no noticeable difference when it comes to the level of comfort. Also, try to avoid making frequent and significant changes to the thermostat settings. Lowering the temperature actually won’t make that much difference in making the air conditioner cool the room faster. It will make it harder and take longer for the aircon to reach and maintain your frequently adjusted lower temperature setting, leading to increased energy consumption by the appliance.
