How Long Can Aircon Piping Last

How Long Can Aircon Piping Last

There are two kinds of piping systems present in a typical home air conditioning unit–the copper (or sometimes carbon steel pipes) for refrigerant gas and the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes for condensation and wastewater drainage. The two types of piping are vastly different in their applications, properties, and life spans. But generally, in a properly installed and well-maintained air conditioning unit, the piping systems can last from 12 to 15 years. The lifespan, of course, is significantly shorter in an AC that only gets a semblance of cursory maintenance and servicing whenever it breaks down or shows an error code on the display.

Copper Pipes for Coolant Gas in Your Aircon

Copper, an excellent material for air conditioning piping systems, conducts heat well and is able to tolerate large temperature variations. Copper does not expand or contract easily during temperature extremes. It is also not prone to producing rust flakes. This is why copper tubing is the most commonly used conduit for carrying refrigerant gas in air conditioners, as well as serve as connective piping between the indoor and outdoor sub-units of a split-type air conditioner.

Carbon steel piping, an alloy of steel and carbon, is also used in air conditioning systems, though less popular compared to copper. It is favored mainly for its superior strength and durability. Even thin carbon steel pipes can withstand large volumes of flowing material.

The lifespan of the copper piping in your air conditioning unit can be up to 20 years. Its main weakness is corrosion, which happens when copper gets exposed to acidic water. But there are ways to effectively protect the copper pipes in your AC. One of them, and the most basic, is applying protective coating to the exterior of the pipes. Appropriate lubricants applied to moving parts of the pipes–including the valves, joints, and other fittings–help immensely to reduce friction that damages the surfaces of pipes. Most importantly, do regular checks and servicing of the coils to prevent corrosion.

If there are leakages, repair them as soon as possible to prevent further damage. And with air conditioning systems, refrigerant gas leaks are easy to detect. The sweetish, cloying ether-like odor of the gas should instantly tip you to a leaking pipe.

Insulation is also necessary to protect copper pipes in your air conditioning unit. Copper tube insulation can be made of ordinary rubber, nitrile rubber, XLPE (cross linked polyethylene), and several other suitable materials. The different copper tubes in an AC are wrapped with insulating material separately in order to prevent any contact with potentially corrosive humid air.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Civil Defence Force has published a set of safety guidelines for laying out aircon pipework, which you can use as reference during the installation.

Polyvinyl Chloride Pipes for Water Drainage in Your Aircon

PVC is a good thermoplastic and does not react to the chemicals present in air conditioning systems. It is the favored piping material for carrying moisture away from the drain pan or tray inside the indoor fan coil unit. When the AC is running, the heat exchange process produces condensation that drips into the drain tray and down to the PVC pipe for proper drainage away from the air conditioning unit. The consistently moist environment encourages mold and bacterial formation, necessitating regular maintenance and cleaning of the drain tray and PVC drain pipe. Moldy gunk tends to form inside the pipe, often clogging it. You can use a pressurized nozzle to more efficiently remove clogs.

Owing to their lack of susceptibility to corrosion, the service life of PVC pipes is amazingly long and can be for at least 100 years. The first things to break down in an AC drain pipe are the duct fittings and clips attaching the PVC hose to the aircon. Fittings are, of course, readily replaceable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Aircon Piping Lifespan in Singapore

With a proper installation and in ideal conditions, well-insulated copper piping, which is the standard for split-unit systems, can last 15 to 20 years or more. However, in Singapore’s specific climate and urban environment, various factors can significantly reduce this lifespan, with many systems requiring piping attention or replacement within 10 to 15 years.

Singapore’s climate is a primary accelerator of piping degradation due to:

  • High Humidity: Constant moisture in the air promotes corrosion on copper pipes and joints, especially if the insulation is damaged.
  • Salt & Pollutants: For coastal areas and high-rise buildings, airborne salt can accelerate corrosion. General urban pollution can also contribute.
  • Constant Heat: Piping is often exposed to high temperatures in the outdoor condenser area, which can cause insulation to break down faster.

Be alert for these warning signs:

  • Reduced Cooling: The unit runs but doesn’t cool the room effectively.
  • Frequent On/Off Cycling: The compressor short cycles because it can’t maintain pressure.
  • Hissing or Bubbling Sounds: This can indicate refrigerant gas escaping from a small leak.
  • Ice Formation: Ice build-up on the evaporator coils or copper pipes is a classic sign of low refrigerant due to a leak.
  • A Sudden Spike in Electricity Bills: The system works harder to compensate for lost refrigerant.

Yes, absolutely. Installation is the most critical factor. Common installation issues in Singapore include:

  • Poor Insulation: Gaps or thin insulation allow condensation to form, leading to corrosion.
  • Kinked or Bent Pipes: Sharp bends during installation can create weak points that eventually crack or leak.
  • Unsupported Piping: Pipes that are not properly secured can vibrate against structures, wearing down the insulation and metal over time.
  • Poor Brazing/Joining: Weak joints are the most common source of refrigerant leaks.

It can be a double-edged sword.

  • Advantage: It is protected from direct physical damage, sunlight, and some environmental elements.
  • Disadvantage: If the conduit is not properly sealed, moisture can become trapped inside, creating a highly corrosive environment. Furthermore, a leak is much more costly and destructive to repair, as it often requires breaking open the wall.

It depends on the leak’s location and number.

  • Repair: A skilled technician can repair a small, accessible leak by brazing (soldering) the copper pipe. This is a common and viable solution.
  • Replacement: If there are multiple leaks, if the piping is extensively corroded, or if the leak is in an inaccessible area (e.g., deep within a wall), a complete piping replacement is usually the more reliable and cost-effective long-term solution.

Professional Installation: Choose a reputable installer with certified technicians who follow best practices.

  • Regular Servicing: During routine maintenance, a good technician will visually inspect exposed piping for signs of corrosion, damage to insulation, and oil stains that indicate a leak.
  • Protect Outdoor Units: Ensure the outdoor condenser unit is installed in a well-ventilated but reasonably sheltered location to minimize direct exposure to the heaviest rain and sun.

The piping itself (copper) is compatible with common refrigerants like R32 and R410A. However, the move to newer refrigerants like R32 has made proper installation even more critical. R32 operates at a higher pressure than the older R22, meaning any weak points or poor joints in the piping will be more susceptible to leaking.

A full piping replacement is one of the more significant aircon repairs. Costs can range from several hundred to over a thousand dollars per unit, depending on the length of the pipe run, accessibility, and the number of fan coils. It is a labour-intensive job.

This is a major financial decision. If your aircon system is over 8-10 years old and requires a major repair like a full piping replacement, it is often more economical in the long run to invest in a new system. Newer models are far more energy-efficient (saving on monthly bills), come with a warranty, and you will have brand-new components throughout, avoiding another major repair on an aging system soon.
