HDB Centralised Aircon

Living in Singapore means coping with year-round heat and humidity. For residents of HDB flats, staying cool and comfortable can be a challenge, especially in large homes or those with multiple rooms. While there are many air conditioning systems on the market, HDB centralised air conditioning stands out as a top choice for cooling entire flats efficiently and effectively. At Silverback Aircon, we believe in providing homeowners with the best and most cost-effective air conditioning solutions. In this article, we will discuss the features of centralised aircon systems that make them an especially excellent choice for HDB flats, as well as the benefits they offer over conventional air conditioners.

What is HDB Centralised Air Conditioning?
HDB centralised air conditioning is a centralized system that cools multiple rooms or an entire flat using one large, powerful AC unit. Unlike traditional split or window air conditioners, which each require their own outdoor unit and often serve only one room, centralised AC systems use a single compressor located outside the home that is connected to a network of ducts running throughout the flat. These ducts deliver cool air to each room, providing consistent cooling to every space. To know more about aircon pipework, check out “Essential Guide to Aircon Piping Installation.”
Centralised Air Conditioning Systems in Tengah Flats
Tengah, consisting of five districts and with a long-term plan of building 42,000 homes, has long been touted as a town founded on environmental sustainability. This is why residents of Tengah BTO flats are currently the only users of centralised air conditioning systems in Singapore. Aircon manufacturer Daikin has been contracted by the HDB to install and manage the centralised AC systems in Tengah.
This air conditioning alternative cools indoor spaces not through refrigerants but by running chilled water through a pipe. In a centralised AC system, the water is chilled in a centralised chiller (or a chiller plant) that has a capacity to support an entire housing block, in this case the Tengah housing units. The AC pipework passes through the building’s corridors and enters each flat through the front door.
Meanwhile, Tengah residents have raised some issues in connection to their centralised air conditioning systems. Issues include water leakage from condensation, the aircon not cooling the room sufficiently, and the unsightly bulk of the aircon trunking to cover and protect the ducts. The recurring leakage problem and other technical issues were explained by the SP Group through a statement. The problems were correlated with faults in the workmanship as a result of the hurried timeline in installing and stabilizing the AC systems. To address the aesthetic issue with the trunking, the SP Group offers 3D renders and mock-ups of boxed-up aircon trunking and other interior design duct concealment styles to BTO owners, enabling them to plan ahead.

Why Choose HDB Centralised Aircon?
One of the biggest advantages of an HDB centralised aircon system is that it can cool the entire flat with ease. Whether you live in a 3-room, 4-room, or 5-room HDB flat, a centralised aircon system ensures that every room is evenly cooled, eliminating hot spots and ensuring consistent comfort throughout your home. No more need for multiple individual units in each room–a single system is enough to keep your entire home cool and comfortable. This is especially beneficial for larger HDB flats with multiple rooms. Centralised aircon systems can maintain an even temperature across the whole home, making it ideal for families who want every space, from the living room to the bedrooms, to be comfortably cool. It is also quieter compared to traditional non-inverter ACs, keeping noise levels inside the home to a minimum.
With traditional air conditioners, you may have bulky units in every room, taking up valuable space. Centralised aircon systems, however, use a network of ducts and vents that are discreetly installed in the ceiling or walls, freeing up floor space and offering a clean, streamlined look. This is particularly useful in HDB flats where space is often at a premium. Since there is only one outdoor unit required for the entire system, you won’t have to worry about cluttering the balcony or external wall with multiple outdoor units.
In addition to offering comprehensive cooling, centralised air conditioning systems are known for their energy efficiency. These systems use a large inverter-controlled compressor to generate cool air that is distributed throughout the flat. The centralized design allows for more efficient cooling, as it avoids the energy waste associated with running multiple units in different rooms.
This results in significant energy savings over time, reducing your electricity bills while still maintaining comfort.
A centralised aircon system also comes with zone control, meaning you can adjust the temperature in different parts of your flat individually. If one household member prefers a cooler environment in the bedroom, while another enjoys a warmer setting in the living room, you can set different temperatures to suit each area. Zone control maximizes comfort and ensures that electricity is used efficiently in areas where cooling is needed.
Considerations for Installing HDB Centralised Aircon
- Relatively higher installation cost. While centralised air conditioning systems are more efficient in the long run, they can come with a higher initial installation cost compared to individual air conditioning units. However, many homeowners find that the investment pays off over time due to lower energy bills. It is also important to note that installing a centralised air conditioning system in an HDB flat requires professional installation, as it involves the setting up of ducts, vents, and a compressor.
- Need for regular aircon maintenance. Centralised aircon systems generally require regular maintenance so they continue to operate efficiently. This includes checking the ducts for any blockages, cleaning air filters, and servicing the outdoor compressor. A well-maintained system not only cools your home effectively but also prolongs the lifespan of the equipment.
- Enough space for installation. Before installation, it is important to consider the space required for the central cooling plant and ductwork. In most HDB flats, this can be accommodated in ceiling spaces or mechanical rooms, but it is best to consult with an expert to determine the most efficient layout for your home.
