Thinking about re-installing your piping for your house, or planning to install a new Aircon unit. Well you have come to the right place. In this article we will break down for you all you need to know about Aircon Piping installation. Including the materials needed, things to take note of and several ways you can get shortchanged. However, we will not be covering Aircon installation via ducting.
AIRCON materials needed for Aircon installation
This is pretty much the most important Aircon material you need to take note of. It is advisable to use thicker insulation for installation of Air-conditioner at home. The thicker the insulation, the more likely it is to absorb condensation from the water pipes. Besides, it is extremely costly to re-run Air-conditioning piping. That is due to the cost of the materials and the labor involved.
For insulation, there is a pretty general term being used by Air-conditioning installers in Singapore, namely “upgraded materials”. For upgraded materials, the insulation used is ½ Inch Armaflex insulation; where as normal materials will be using 3/8 inch Armaflex insulation. If you take a look at the picture below, you can see the difference in size of the insulation. The thicker insulation will be having much better absorption ability.
Other than thickness of the insulation, another property you might be concerned of is the class of insulation. You might have seen the term “ ½ inch Armaflex class 1” or “1/2 inch Armaflex class 0”. The class in these 2 terms refers to the fire property of this insulation. Honestly it doesn’t make any difference to the quality of the materials for your Aircon installation. So it is not something you will need to pay attention to.
As mentioned earlier, the cost of re-running your Aircon piping installation is extremely costly. If there’s any issue of gas leaking, you will either have to change your entire condensing unit or re-install your Aircon piping. The cost of finding out which is leaking is also pretty expensive. Aircon gas leaking
For “upgraded materials” as mentioned earlier, the upgraded copper pipe used will be SWG22 copper pipe, the shorter term for it is G22 copper pipe. The normal material used is G23 copper pipe. For G22 copper pipe it is thicker , hence it is less likely to have gas leak. It will be better able to withstand pressure of the refrigerant.
There are no distinctive brands for the water pipe used. Generally the only 2 sizes used for HDB are 13mm or 16mm. The bigger the better, as water will be better able to flow through it, without causing drainage issue.
Cable / Electrical wire
The ones use to connect your fancoil unit from your compressor is usually three core. The term 3C70 stands for 3 core wire with 70 strands of wire in each cable. In general, go for the Singapore brands wire (for e.g Sigma cable / keystone cable), use the ones that are 3C70.
Aircon Trunking / Casing
Aircon trunking or casing as shown in the picture below. It is used to cover or hide all the relevant Aircon installation materials. The brand or type of trunking does not really matter. The type of trunking that will be used depends on which brand the Aircon installer is familiar with. For Air-con installation in condo, you usually won’t see trunking, as the installation materials are concealed about the ceiling. For HDB, even with false ceiling, the installation materials are usually packed inside the trunking before being concealed up by the false ceiling.
In conclusion, it is imperative to use good Air-conditioning materials for your Aircon installation. This is to prevent serious issues from arising in the future, such as condensation problem or electrical tripping due to broken wire.
