For most homebuyers, getting a Secondhand Aircon is something they will never ever think of. In spite of this, we still receive a lot of request in dismantling their existing Aircon unit. And transport it to the new unit for installation. It might be due to the distrust in Secondhand Aircon sold by Aircon contractors in Singapore. Or it might just be that we trust new stuff more. Even my wife disagrees with buying a Secondhand Aircon at home, despite me being in this trade. Nevertheless, let’s be objective here and evaluate the pros and cons of buying a secondhand Aircon in Singapore. Silverback Aircon provides comprehensive checks with our secondhand aircon before dealing. The Pros of buying 2nd hand Aircon in Singapore
Cheap
This should be the number 1 point that comes to everyone’s mind. If it’s the same price as first hand Aircon, I would rather get a brand new set right?
For reference, the price of a brand new set of Mitsubishi Electric System 3 Aircon (Ge Series) is about $2750. That is inclusive of full installation for HDB. However, if you were to buy an exact model (Mxy-3a28va2/ Ge10va x 3), it will only cost you about $1200 – $1400. That is about half the price you’d be paying for a new set of Aircon.

- It might be cheaper to be serviced in the long run.
This might come as a surprise to most people. But secondhand Aircon of a common brand, such as Mitsubishi Aircon, might be cheaper to service in the long run, as compared to other brands such as Samsung Aircon. This is because it is much harder to find the parts of a Samsung Aircon in Singapore as compared to Mitsubishi Starmex or Panasonic Aircon.
- If you have a rented office / industrial AreaThe standard leasing term for most industrial Area is about 2 years. And the more extensive your renovation is to your office, the more leverage your landlord might have on you future rental. So for those that are renting an office space and are required to install Aircon by themselves. Second hand Aircon is a much preferred choice as compared to a brand new set.
- Used Aircon are thoroughly reconditioned and serviced before sold. It happened to my customer, on the first day of his Aircon purchase, the Circuit board of his Daikin Aircon spoilt. This is a brand new Smile Series Aircon by the way! Do not get me wrong, this could happen to any other brands, such as Panasonic, York or even Midea Aircon. Unlike mobile phones, it is impossible for them to fully test each unit before handling out to customer. As compared to reconditioned Air conditioners, it is surprisingly more likely that the Aircon will be well functioning on the day of installation and the days to come. Furthermore, second hand Aircon is usually thoroughly chemical overhauled before handing over to customers.
The Cons of buying a reconditioned Aircon in Singapore
Trust
Let’s face it , even if you trust the Aircon Contractor in Singapore. Even if he declares to be the best Aircon Contractor in Singapore. A secondhand Aircon may still not instill trust in your heart.
You might be wondering, how long can this last? The fact is, even the Aircon contractor wouldn’t dare to give a long warranty period as well.
Nevertheless, regardless of whatever trust issues you might have with a secondhand Aircon. Let’s think of the purchase in value terms. The price of a secondhand aircon is about half of the price of a brand new set. Assuming that the second hand Aircon can at least last for 1 year ( which isn’t too bad an assumption). The only difference now is that the compressor of a brand new unit has 4 years left.
For your illustration :
The warranty of a brand new Mitsubishi Starmex Aircon is :
5 years on compressor
1 year on parts
So for the next 4 years, to equate to the value of a new Aircon installation. You can repair AS MUCH AS you want, as long as the total cost of repair is half the price of a brand new unit.
For reference, the cost of replacing a Mitsubishi condensing unit is about $500-900.
And after the 4 years, there is virtually no difference between the brand new unit you would have bought and a secondhand Aircon unit. For your information, the warranty does not cover Aircon defects on other parts of the condensing unit. It only covers the compressor. You will also have to pay for their labor fee for them to replace the compressor for you.
Efficiency
This might be the most valid cause of concern. I would say, it is very likely that you will not be able to find a secondhand Aircon unit belonging to the latest model. Hence, it will likely not be of 5 ticks.
If the logic that every newer model of Aircon brings about a more efficient use of energy is correct, then getting the latest Aircon model might be more cost efficient in the long run. However, how much does it really save? Do take note the energy label is highly subjective to usage and other circumstances. So the cost savings might be a little hard to calculate.
So there you go, if you are keen on a Brand new Aircon (like my wife), you are likely not going to get a secondhand Aircon. But if you have any doubts about the usability of a reconditioned Aircon unit, I hope this article is informative and have helped you!
