Aircon Compressor HDB

Aircon Compressor HDB

Air conditioning units are a common fixture in HDB flats across Singapore, offering respite from the unrelenting heat and humidity.  Many homeowners, however, might not be fully aware of the main components that make their air conditioning system work, particularly the aircon compressor. The aircon compressor is vital to the performance and efficiency of the AC system, and when installed in an HDB flat, there are specific considerations that must be taken into account.

What Is an Aircon Compressor?

The aircon compressor is more or less the powerhouse of your air conditioning system. It literally compresses the refrigerant gas, which enables the heat exchange process that cools the air in your home. The compressor works by pressurizing the refrigerant, transforming it into a hot, high-pressure gas that will then be cooled down in the condenser coils.

The compressor is normally located in the outdoor unit installed outside the home on an HDB aircon ledge for newer flats and aircon bracket for older ones. From this outdoor unit, the refrigerant flows to the evaporator coil inside your flat, where the heat is absorbed from the indoor air and then released outside.

Important Things To Note When Installing an Aircon Compressor in Your HDB Flat

If your HDB flat has an aircon ledge, you can install a maximum of two compressors. But if you have an aircon bracket instead of a ledge, you can generally only have one compressor, and if you need two compressors, check with the HDB and submit a report. The report costs around $200, depending on the company. But if you observe several other residents in the block who have installed two compressors in their flats, it is usually generally acceptable to install two units without having to submit a report to the HDB, thereby saving yourself $200.

Setting Up an Aircon Compressor in an HDB Flat

Installing an aircon compressor in an HDB flat comes with specific regulations and considerations. Here are important factors that come into play when installing the compressor unit in your HDB flat:

  1. In an HDB flat, the outdoor compressor unit is typically placed on an aircon ledge or, in some cases, a balcony. This placement is essential for proper air circulation around the unit, allowing it to release heat efficiently. The HDB aircon ledge is designed to support the weight of the compressor, keeping it elevated so it does not come into contact with debris, rain, or water runoff.
  2. One of the major concerns with an aircon compressor is the noise it generates. Compressors can produce vibrations and sound during operation. In high-rise HDB flats, this can sometimes be a source of disturbance for neighbors. HDB regulations require that outdoor aircon units meet specific noise level standards. Homeowners must ensure that the compressor unit is properly installed with vibration dampeners or other noise-reducing features to minimize disturbances.
  3. Before installing an aircon compressor in your HDB flat, you will need to apply for approval from the HDB. This process involves submitting your installation plans and ensuring that the AC placement complies with HDB’s rules. The approval ensures that your outdoor compressor unit will not cause any damage to the building structure or encroach on shared spaces. It is important to work with a licensed and experienced aircon contractor who understands these regulations.
  4. Since the aircon compressor is located outside your home, it must be accessible for servicing at all times. Regular aircon maintenance keeps the AC system running efficiently and prevents breakdowns. A well-placed compressor allows technicians to access the unit for cleaning, checking refrigerant levels, and performing other routine tasks.

Common Aircon Compressor Problems

Like all mechanical components, the aircon compressor is prone to wear and tear over time. Here are some common issues associated with the aircon compressor and how to prevent or address them.

  • If the compressor overheats, it can lead to poor performance or even complete failure. Overheating is usually caused by insufficient refrigerant, clogged filters, or dirty coils. Regular maintenance and servicing of the aircon system are key to preventing overheating.
  • A failing compressor can lead to an inefficient or non-functioning air conditioning system. Causes of compressor failure include electrical issues, refrigerant leaks, and physical damage. If you notice signs of compressor failure, such as strange noises or the air conditioning unit not cooling properly, contact a professional technician immediately.
  • Leaking refrigerant is another common issue that can cause the compressor to malfunction. Low refrigerant levels can lead to reduced cooling performance and increased energy consumption. If you suspect a refrigerant leak, have the AC system checked and recharged by a professional aircon technician.
